I–40 will be reduced to one lane in both directions at To’hajiilee due to a sinkhole.
Heavy rainfall caused a media drop inlet to fail, creating a sinkhole estimated to be about 20 feet deep.
Passing lanes in both directions of I-40 will be closed until the necessary repairs can be made. NMDOT is currently securing I-40 and will barricade the sinkhole with a concrete wall barrier to protect the traveling public.
“NMDOT is committed to protecting the traveling public and will continue monitoring all roadways during these predicted rainstorm events over the next few days,” said Anthony Lujan, Deputy Secretary of Operations, NMDOT.
All work is expected to last throughout the weekend.
