According to an advisory released Wednesday night, the six-foot-wide gap is over a 36-inch gravity sewer pipe located on 138th Ave. east of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. The hole was estimated to be about 30 feet deep.
It has been determined that a broken 36-inch gravity sewer was the root cause of the hole. There is no evidence to indicate the presence of a sinkhole.
As a result, officials say westbound 138th Ave. is closed, and drivers in the area should follow the marked detours currently in place. It will remain closed until further notice, so drivers who are able should avoid the area altogether and seek an alternative route if possible.
A car was actually on top of the pavement when the hole began opening up on Wednesday afternoon. The driver accelerated off the road — damaging her tires from the broken pavement — but got away safely.
Weather permitting, all repairs should be complete and the roadway open to traffic by Monday, June 24.
