A large sinkhole in Markham is expected to leave Bayview Ave. north of Steeles Ave. closed for up to a week.
York Regional Police say a water main break has crumpled the road, leaving a sinkhole that’s 1.5 metres deep, 30 metres long and 10 metres wide.
Bayview is closed in both directions at Laureleaf Rd. Police said the road will likely will remain closed for up to a week as the damage is extensive.
There is also considerable flooding so motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Those driving around the city this weekend should also be wary of road closures.
On Sunday, Danforth Ave. will be closed between Kingston Rd. and Birchmount Rd. for a Variety Village charity event. The closure will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Kensington Market’s Pedestrian Sunday event will see parts of Augusta Ave., Baldwin St., Kensington Ave. and St. Andrew St. closed from noon until 7 p.m.
And there will be rolling road closures throughout the city for the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday.
