Baltimore, Maryland. August 22nd, 2011.

West Baltimore Street remained closed between Hood Street and Summit Avenue on Monday afternoon while workers from the City of Hagerstown’s Water Department worked to repair a 12-inch water main and fill in a sinkhole in the street.

The water main broke at about 3 a.m., said Michael Spiker, director of utilities for the City of Hagerstown Utilities Department.

The running water from the water main created a sinkhole in the street, according to Spiker.

The hole measured 12 feet long by 6 feet wide and 4 feet deep.

Workers shut down the water main when they arrived on the scene.

Repairing the water main required more excavation in the street, according to Spiker.
