A stretch of Richmond St. has been closed due to a large sinkhole in the intersection of Richmond and Oxford streets. Richmond St. between Piccadilly and Oxford St. is closed in both directions after a manhole caved in Saturday night.
Four lanes of Richmond were dug up as crews worked to repair the sinkhole. The work is expected to take at least a couple of days, said one city staffer. One lane of Oxford St. in open in both directions.
Downtown is no stranger to sinkholes. There are about 175 water main breaks every year. In 2007, a large sinkhole, which cost $1 million to fix, closed the intersection of Dundas and Wellington streets for weeks, snarling traffic.
