Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. June 2nd, 2011.

Residents of Pittsburgh’s North Side said they’re concerned about three large sinkholes that formed near Morrow Elementary School.

“We are afraid of the kids getting hurt. The school buses come down here. This is a school zone. And the kids are curious, they go over and look at it,” said neighbor Sophie Murray.

Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski said the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority did a repair in the area after a water main break in May.

“The water main caused the base to wash out and ended with a sinkhole,” Kaczorowski said. “Obviously whenever you have a hole in the street it is a dangerous situation. The main thing is it has been roped off and secured. The main thing is getting it repaired now.”

Just down the street, another area has now been marked off, and neighbors said they fear the problem is growing.

The PWSA said they will replace the water main along Fleming Avenue and said contractors will begin the work on June 6. The project is expected to be completed within two weeks.
